On a recent afternoon, a young family stopped by the Valley-Shore YMCA with a heartfelt request. The mother, with a baby in one arm, needed a place for her children to stay while she went to work. All her other options had been exhausted, she explained, and the family needed a second income these days to stay afloat.
During these tough economic times, more and more people are having difficulty making ends meet. As a YMCA, we promise to be a support system for those who are struggling. The Y has always made our facilities and programs available to every child, family and senior citizen, regardless of ability to pay. This is made possible through generous donations to our Strong Kids Campaign from local businesses and individuals like you.
Your donation to the YMCA will help make a real difference in the lives of the children and families we serve. Last year, with the help of contributions from local residents, the YMCA was able to distribute more than $177,000 in scholarships and financial aid.
The 2011 Strong Kids Campaign helped provide:
· $104,956 in membership assistance to more than 2,000 shoreline residents or their families
· Roughly $72,000 in scholarships for YMCA programs and services, including childcare, afterschool programs and preschool
· Free swimming lessons for all Daisy Ingraham Elementary School first grade students
· Health education and fitness programs for local youth at eight different school sites along the shoreline
