I wanted to start by saying “Thank You!” for all your warm welcomes and kindness as I begin my journey as the new Executive Director at the Valley-Shore YMCA. Thank you, as well, for all of your support, hard work, and commitment to our YMCA community. Our combined efforts and genuine kindness make us a special YMCA for members, children, participants, your fellow staff, and now for me!
As I’ve walked the building over the past month, I’ve asked members and staff the same question, “What should I know about our YMCA?” The responses fall into two main categories:
- The Staff. There is a tremendous amount of pride from each of you about your role at the YMCA and respect you have for your peers. Virtually every staff member I spoke to mentioned how much they enjoyed working here and how they felt their fellow staff were our YMCA biggest asset. Overwhelming, the members and families I have spoken to have sung your praises. That Susie knows everyone’s name, that they owe Lisa and her energy to their healthy lifestyle, that Rick is quick to respond to any housekeeping need, that Renate is always so friendly and says hello to everyone. And the list goes on and on of the members’ favorite staff and the way they build relationships. Well done, all!
- Opportunity. All you have to do is ask! So many people I have spoken to have lots of ideas to add more value and excitement to the great work we do every day. Members and staff alike have shared countless suggestions of both small and big changes that we can make. Staff overwhelmingly have expressed a desire to have a bigger voice and active role in adding new programs and policies (and had lots of great ideas to offer). Members overwhelmingly shared ideas that improve their personal experience, from facility improvements to new programs. Over the next twelve months, you will hear more about ways we will all work together to design programs and tighten our daily operations. I look forward to working with all of you!
Thank you again for being a part of the YMCA family! I look forward to meeting you, and for an amazing 2013 together!
